50 YEARS AGO
April 25, 1957 — Our Savior’s Lutheran Church, St. Olaf Lutheran Church and Blanchard Lutheran Church presented their pastor, Rev. C.F. Savereide, with a new 1957 Ford sedan as an Easter gift. Savereide had served the congregations for 15 years.
Hillsboro Kiwanis club organized their annual “After Prom” show for HHS juniors and seniors. Prom goers were invited to a movie at the Traill Theater and lunch at the Legion Hall. The program was designed to “keep the youngsters off the highways following the prom.”
Grasshoppers posed a major problem for Traill farmers. As a precaution, county commissioners ordered the spraying of all county and state road right-of-ways, all railroads and all legal drains. Eleven of the 25 townships in the county had also issued a similar order. (more…)

50 YEARS AGO
April 18, 1957 — Cliff Gunderson and Ed Buchholz sold the Hillsboro Coast-to-Coast store to Les Fawcett of Moorhead.
Paul Jorgenson was the new mechanic at Hovet Implement in Hillsboro. With 20 years of experience, Jorgenson had previously worked for John Deere implements in Halstad, Minn. and Hunter, N.D.
“Farmers are in the fields, homeowners are raking their lawns, all indications of spring are apparent — except for the weather.” No snow but temps hovered in the 40s and even dipped to 9 degrees one night.
The “Easter Value Parade” at the Red & White Food Store in Hillsboro featured a one-pound carton of Nash’s coffee for 95 cents, a two-pound bag of raisins for 37 cents and half-pint jars of homemade chokecherry jelly for 49 cents. (more…)

50 YEARS AGO
April 11, 1957 — Arrested just hours after robbing two Hillsboro grocery stores, a remorseful suspect pled guilty just four days later and was sentenced to a year at the state prison farm. The late night bungling burglar had left a trail of footprints in freshly fallen snow for local police to follow and netted just $32, six packs of cigarettes and a wrist watch in his crime wave.
Hillsboro Civic and Commerce hosted the annual Mr. and Mrs. Community Night at the HHS auditorium. A free show by The Elksters and a free supper were part of the festivities.
A wet snowfall dashed hopes for an early spring.   (more…)
