May 23, 1957 — Three people were killed in three separate car accidents near Hillsboro during a 20-hour span over the weekend.
Supt. Lars Grant announced the hiring of new staff at Hillsboro schools for next fall — Sherilyn Fogelson and Gayle Tisdale, both second grade teachers; Jean Valinski, third grade; Beverly Hesby, fourth and fifth grade; Vernita Olson, fifth grade; and Willard Olson, commercial courses.
Kenneth Harstad and James Notch were the top two graduates of the Class of 1957 at Hillsboro High School. Commencement exercises for the 29 seniors were set for Friday night at the HHS gym. (more…)

May 16, 1957 — George Sorlie, newly-elected president of the Hillsboro PTA, lobbied for annexation of rural school districts to the Hillsboro School District “to improve facilities and opportunities for local students.” Sorlie charged the local school was “50 years behind the times.”
Hillsboro Park Board members sought help from the community in resurfacing the tennis courts in Woodland Park.
More than 21 sections of land in Grand Forks County were annexed to the Reynolds School District after a special meeting between Grand Forks and Traill county commissioners. The annexation already had the approval of state officials.
Halverson Furniture advertised Samsonite luggage as “the perfect gift for graduates.” (more…)

May 9, 1957 — Hillsboro Civic and Commerce Club sponsored a $500 scholarship for student nurses to help overcome a nurses’ shortage at the local community hospital.
Hillsboro High School graduate Doug Falconer passed the entrance exam for the U.S. Naval Academy at Annapolis.
Hillsboro’s track team won the Red River Valley Conference title for the third straight year. A rainy, windy day prevented competition in at least one event — the pole vault. Four Burros qualified for the state meet — Lawrence Grant and Wes Fossum in the 220-yard dash and John Oman and Jim Hausman in the broad jump. (more…)

May 2, 1957 — “Confusion and tempers rose in unison” as more towns in this area switched from Central Standard Time to Daylight Saving Time, following the course set by major cities in eastern North Dakota Sunday, April 28. Fargo and Grand Forks switched to “fast time” to match their neighbors in Minnesota, where the change was mandated by the Legislature. Hillsboro city officials approved the change to DST at a special meeting Friday afternoon prior to the scheduled change. Around the county, Mayville, Caledonia, Cummings, Bohnsack, Clifford and Kelso made the change — some on Monday and some later in the week. Residents in the Blanchard and Taft areas couldn’t agree which time to follow. The time change also affected the train and mail schedules in the area. (more…)
