July 25, 1957 — Hillsboro city commissioners called for bids to erect a mausoleum for the city-owned Elmwood Cemetery. The fireproof building would provide storage for 24 caskets during the winter months when the ground is frozen.
Two steers were killed on the highway east of Mayville when they were struck by a passing car.
In district court, a Grand Forks man was sentenced to $15 or 30 days in jail for drunkedness. A Fargo man was ordered to pay a $41.50 fine for driving under the influence.
Hillsboro’s Civic and Commerce Association reminded shoppers: “Don’t be blinded by out-of-town shopping lures — big bargains, glib promises. Look around and you’ll find your best buys are here. Shop in your community.” (more…)

July 18, 1957 — To beat the summer heat, a record number of swimmers jammed the year-old Hillsboro swimming pool last Sunday. More than 600 people took a dip in the cool pool at some point during the day. The following Sunday the count was 593. Free Red Cross swimming lessons were well attended on Tuesday and Thursday evenings at the pool.

July 11, 1957 — A public meeting about the location of Hwy. 18 broke into a heated argument in Mayville. The state highway department suggested rerouting the road directly north of Blanchard to join with Hwy. 7 five miles east of Mayville. The present route turned west at Blanchard for five miles before turning north into Mayville. Most of the 75 people at the meeting wanted the route left unchanged.
John Trygg was hired as the new football, basketball and track coach at Hillsboro High School. Trygg had managed the city pool the previous summer and recently completed his teaching degree at UND. (more…)

July 4, 1957 — After months of indecision and delay, the new Hillsboro National Guard Armory was expected to be under construction before the end of the month. The building was estimated to cost $208,000 with the city paying about $36,000 toward the project, which was a joint effort of local, state and federal funds.
The Banner featured photos from one of the 1,200 sugar beet farms in the Red River Valley, noting the use of new mechanical thinners. Growers had planted 95,000 acres of beets this spring, a 10-percent increase over the 1956 crop. (more…)
